We are especially excited to present Spiritual Voices, originally part of our 2020 NEA funded “Changing the Conversation” series. In recognition of Juneteenth 2021, we have created a video that brings this wonderful music to you.
This concert presents a major work of Olly Wilson (1937-2018): “A City Called Heaven” for large ensemble. Also on the program is “Grist for the Mill,” a work by Duke composer Anthony Kelley, who earned his Ph.D. studying with Wilson; Mark Kuss’s “7 Spirituals and Work Songs of the United States”; and Ben Johnston’s “Amazing Grace” quartet, which takes the beloved hymn as the basis for a wild and deeply moving journey. Performers include the Ciompi Quartet; Benjamin Fingland, clarinet; Laura Gilbert, flute; Mike Williams and Chris Lennard, percussion; Ieva Jokubaviciute, piano; Verena Moesenbichler-Bryant, conductor. The video performance will premiere June 19 at 4 PM and be available for viewing after that.
