Renowned pianist Mihae Lee and her husband, distinguished horn player William Purvis, are joined by violinist Jessica Lee in a concert of trios featuring the noblest brass instrument, including Brahms Trio Op. 40, and “Twilight” by American master John Harbison.
A rare chance to hear the rapturous sound of the French horn in a chamber setting, this concert brings one of the nation’s great horn players to the EEC stage: Willam Purvis has a multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. He is a frequent guest of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and collaborates with some of the most esteemed musicians, including the Brentano, Juilliard, Tokyo, and Orion String Quartets. Violinist Jessica Lee was Grand Prize Winner of the 2005 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. She has appeared around the world and in this country at places such as Weill Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and The Phillips Collection, and she performs with orchestras across the nation as a violin soloist. Pianist Mihae Lee was an artist-member of the Boston Chamber Music Society for three decades. She has appeared at prominent festivals and venues across the country in every capacity. Reviews of her many recordings note her sound for being “as warm as Rubinstein, yet virile as Toscanini.”
The centerpiece of the concert is Johannes Brahms’ Horn Trio, which is among the composer’s great works and a beloved icon of romantic music for horn-worshippers. Clara Schumann, Brahms great interpreter and friend, was also a composer of the highest order. Her “Romances” are masterpieces in miniature. John Harbison’s “Twilight” provides a 21st-century expansion of the sonic possibilities the horn trio is capable of.
