George Gopen is Professor Emeritus of the Practice of Rhetoric at Duke University, where for 27 years he directed the University Writing Program and held appointments in the English Department and the Law School. He taught courses in the rhetorical analysis of music, poetry, and non-fiction. He now acts as consultant to law firms, medical/scientific companies, and government agencies on matters of professional writing. A life-long musical devotee, he has sung as a member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus and the Choral Society of Durham, has played recorders and bass viola da gamba as a member of the Wakefield Consort, has directed his own madrigal group, and as pianist has accompanied a number of local artists in lieder recitals at Duke University, Emory University, the Israeli Embassy, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. He is the Director of the Chamber Arts Society of Durham, which brings the world’s finest chamber artists to North Carolina.
