A journey through the heart of German Romanticism, from Brahms’s early symphonic Serenade, to Mahler’s cycle Songs of a Wayfarer to Richard Strauss’ late Capriccio (1942), performed in arrangements for chamber ensemble under the renowned German conductor Andreas Delfs. Program to include Strauss’s String Sextet from Capriccio; Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer; Franz Schrecker’s Chamber Symphony; and Brahms’s Serenade Op. 11.
Music From the Spirit World
Composers have always been attracted to aspects of the supernatural; music itself often is held to come from a higher place—or at least a different one—than do our daily experiences. This is a fun, and slightly spooky, concert . . . Program to include Gluck’s Dance of the Blessed Spirits, from Orpheus and Euridyce; Schumann’s Theme from Auditory Hallucinations; Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, Op. 23; Charles Griffes’s The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan; André Caplet’s Conte Fantastique after Poe’s “Masque of the Red Death”; and George Crumb’s Night of the Four Moons.
